Understanding Divine Masculinity Femininity

Understanding Divine Masculinity & Femininity

Written by Cheri Stirling

Last week, we explored the foundational truth that we are children of God—divine in origin and eternal in nature. This truth is more than a comforting idea; it’s a foundational reality that changes everything. If we are truly “gods in embryo,” as has often been taught, then our lives have a purpose. We are here to grow, to become, and to reflect the divine attributes of our Heavenly Parents, just as mortal children grow and mature into the likeness of their earthly parents.

Elder Dallin H. Oaks emphasized this eternal perspective when he taught, “Our theology begins with heavenly parents. Our highest aspiration is to be like them.” That divine lineage holds profound implications—not only about where we come from, but about who we are becoming.”

In the temple, we are reminded of the story of Adam and Eve—not just as historical figures, but as symbolic types of ourselves. Their story is a pattern that teaches us eternal truths. In ‘Consider Yourself as Eve’, Meghan writes, “Adam and Eve are [also] representative shadows of Father and Mother, two halves of a whole, one masculine and one feminine. They are perfect counterparts and complements, completing one another to bring about a fullness. Together, they reflect the true nature of God—a God and a Goddess, working in covenant harmony with each other.”

This harmony between the divine masculine and feminine is foundational to understanding not only who God is—but who we are. Our Heavenly Parents are not distant or abstract figures. They are the eternal source of our souls, the divine archetypes after which we are patterned. Heavenly Father embodies the Divine Masculine. Heavenly Mother embodies the Divine Feminine. United in purpose and love, They create, nurture, and lead with perfect balance.

As spirit children of Heavenly Parents, we carry within us those same divine blueprints. If our eternal goal is to become like Them, then we must ask: What does that look like? What does divine masculinity or femininity look like when lived intentionally? And how can we begin to embody those energies in our own lives, especially within our marriages and families?

What is Divine Masculine and Feminine?

Like the ancient yin-yang symbol from Chinese philosophy, masculine and feminine energies are not opposites in conflict—they are complementary forces that together bring wholeness and life. In our spiritual development, our goal is to align our divine spirit with our physical body, expressing our gendered spirit as fully as possible.

In ‘Consider Yourself as Eve‘, Meghan outlines characteristics and symbolic representations of feminine and masculine spirits:

As Nephi teaches: “For it must needs be, that there is an opposition in all things.” (2 Nephi 2:11) Masculine and feminine qualities are not only essential—they are divinely designed to bring balance, synergy, and power to individuals and relationships. Feminine traits like empathy, intuition, and nurturing complement masculine qualities like structure, logic, and leadership. When harmonized, they create an ideal environment for spiritual and emotional growth.

Divine Polarity Strengthens Relationships

We all have been taught in school that ‘opposites attract’. Like a magnet, the divine polarity between masculine and feminine energy is not meant to create competition, but completion. In healthy relationships, each partner steps more fully into their divine role—allowing space for the other to do the same.

Men who embrace the divine masculine often find deep fulfillment in “doing”: providing, protecting, problem-solving, and pursuing purpose. When this energy is honored, they become grounded, purposeful, and engaged.

Women, when invited to rest into their divine feminine, often find themselves less overwhelmed, less anxious, and more able to nurture, create, and bring life into their homes and relationships. This doesn’t mean women should never “do,” nor men should never “be”—but that we thrive when we lean into our core energy more often than not.

Author and coach, Allie Duzett explains this in her book ‘Magnetic Femininity’:

“Where masculine energy is leading, feminine energy is following. This was very distressing for me to come to terms with… because I viewed myself as a leader. When I prayed about it, I heard, ‘You are the left hand.’ I was making cookies at the time. My right hand—the dominant hand—was stirring, representing masculine energy. But my left hand was holding the bowl. Without it, the process wouldn’t work. Both hands were essential, just in different roles. Being a follower is not ‘less than.’ The feminine energy enables masculine leadership. Without it, leadership cannot move forward.”

This idea may feel countercultural, especially today, when women are often encouraged to be “superwoman”—balancing careers, families, church, and community responsibilities. While women can do it all, the question is: At what cost to their spirit? Constant doing can lead to burnout and disconnection from their nurturing, creative essence. Taking a quick scroll on social media will indicate that that is exactly what is happening in society, as many women are expressing frustration with things like mental load, or feeling isolated in endless to-do lists.

Likewise, men in today’s world may feel unsure of their role when women are constantly in “go” mode. Without a clear need to protect, lead, or provide, men may disengage—retreating into passive roles or addictive distractions like video games, sports, or digital escapes. Not because they are lazy, but because they no longer feel needed or empowered.

Healing Begins with Us

To bring balance into our relationships and homes, we must start with ourselves.

Ask: Am I aligned with my spirit? Am I living from my divine core? As we reconnect with our spiritual design, we naturally invite our spouses and children to do the same. It becomes less about correcting others and more about becoming who we were always meant to be.

This journey of alignment is deeply sacred. As we embody the divine masculine or feminine, we become living reflections of our Heavenly Parents. We begin to see Their image—not only in ourselves—but in our spouses, our children, and the world around us.

I am a Child of God

You are not just a body. You are not just a personality. You are a divine spirit—eternal, radiant, and designed in the image of God. You are a son or daughter of Heavenly Parents, carrying within you the sacred light of both the Divine Masculine and Divine Feminine.

As we learn to understand and embrace these energies, we step into a deeper partnership with God. We find power in our divine nature, and purpose in our divine roles. And most importantly, we discover that the path to becoming like Them is not through imitation alone—but through love, balance, and becoming whole.
