At Latter-Day Disciples, we believe in becoming self-reliant, but maybe not in the sense you are used to hearing about. We believe that we need to learn the skills to be able to provide for our family and neighbors as best we can in good times and bad, but also develop the spiritual strength and connection to be able to rely wholly on the Lord. Elder Bruce R. McConkie said, “Great trials lie ahead. All of the sorrows and perils of the past are but a foretaste of what is yet to be… Our spiritual preparation consists in keeping the commandments of God, and taking the Holy Spirit for our guide, so that when this life is over we shall find … an ultimate inheritance of glory and honor in the Celestial Kingdom.” (Stand Independent above All Other Creatures, 1979) We focus on preparations in five main areas: spiritual, physical, mental, emotional, and temporal.
