Temple Theology
A True Pattern
Throughout history, the Lord has lovingly guided His people through sacred temple ordinances—symbolic rituals designed to teach us how to become more like our Heavenly Parents. This divine pattern, often called the ‘Covenant Path,’ is far more than a series of ceremonies. It reflects the real, lived experiences that shape our spiritual journey—a path of growth, refinement, and ascension as seen throughout the scriptures. The Latter-Day Disciples team is dedicated to providing you with meaningful tools and resources to help you understand and embrace this powerful pattern in your daily life.

Understanding Covenants
We often describe a covenant as a ‘two-way promise between us and God,’ viewing it much like a spiritual contract with our Heavenly Parents. However, to the ancient Israelites, a covenant was far more—it was a deeply personal relationship, one that invited them to know God intimately and become like Him. Each ordinance, from baptism to sealing, is not just a commitment but an opportunity to ascend spiritually—a journey beautifully illustrated by the prophet Isaiah. As disciples of Christ, our ultimate goal is to walk this covenant path, following His perfect example and drawing ever closer to our divine potential.
Seeking to Ascend
Isaiah’s Ladder of Ascension is a symbolic framework found in the book of Isaiah that outlines the spiritual journey toward becoming more like God. This “ladder” reflects stages of growth and covenant-keeping that ultimately lead to exaltation. Isaiah describes various spiritual levels, often categorized as the wicked, the repentant, the righteous, and those who attain God’s presence (Isaiah 6; Isaiah 33:14-17). Each step corresponds to increasing faithfulness in keeping covenants, aligning closely with the temple experience. For example, temple ordinances guide participants through progressive commitments — from baptism and receiving the Holy Ghost to higher covenants of consecration — echoing Isaiah’s call to “walk righteously and speak uprightly” (Isaiah 33:15). Just as Isaiah’s vision depicts ascending to the presence of the Lord (Isaiah 2:2-3), temple covenants provide a sacred path of preparation, inviting disciples to ascend spiritually and draw closer to God through obedience, sacrifice, and love.
