Honey & Lilies

Written by Cheri Stirling

I have always been fascinated with the scriptural prophecies of the Lord’s Second Coming. As a young girl, and teenager, I would get pumped like it was a pre-game assembly. I wanted to be there, I wanted to be a part of it.

Fast forward to 2020, and like so many others, it was a bit of a wake up call. We had thankfully just gone to Costco and stocked up on paper goods, but we ended up giving away almost half the package away to neighbors who couldn’t find the ever elusive toilet paper. On the flip side, we had just had a baby, and finding things like diapers, wipes, and formula were challenging. My husband and I started evaluating how prepared we were for different situations, because I realized I didn’t want to not only be prepared to help my family, but to be able to help my friends as well.

I was a public school teacher for the last seven years. And in the last seven years, I have lived through several “once in your career”, “unprecedented”, events.

My second year teaching, there was a giant freeze, where temperatures dropped suddenly, and created a permafrost over a foot deep. Then, it snowed for several days, to the point that my car was COVERED. This was immediately followed by 50 degree weather, in FEBRUARY. Frozen solid ground, with several feet of snow caused… flooding. All of these events ended up causing almost a month out of school, because either buses couldn’t run, the roads were closed, or there wasn’t power/heat in the buildings. The whole time, I had veteran teachers telling me, ‘This is a once in a career event.’ ‘You’ll never miss this much school again.’

But then at the beginning of 2020, I found myself in yet another crazy year of school closures, where from Spring Break on, we taught virtually. This was followed by another year of masks, sanitizing, and social distancing.

“Our Savior and Redeemer, Jesus Christ, will perform some of His mightiest works between now and when He comes again.”

Russell M. Nelson

Obviously, I don’t know if I’ll see Jesus return, but I do know the TP-Apocalypse won’t be the last time things will completely change overnight, and I want to be prepared for whatever may come. I want to be a person who can help.

As I thought about what to name this blog, the image of “a land of milk and honey”, and “the lilies of the field” came to mind. Life right now is heavy. Whether it’s keeping up with changes or policies at your work due to the pandemic, or the constant onslaught of politics, or just the sheer amount of crazy that comes from normal life right now. (For reals though, who forgot to tell us about that part of adulting? I definitely missed that memo.)

I want my home to be a place that is plentiful. Self-reliant. Self-sufficient. I want it to be a place where I don’t have to stress about tomorrow, and what it will bring. I want the walls of my home to be a refuge from the storm that’s raging.

So here, I want to create a place where we as sisters can help each other. A place to share ways to strengthen our homes for whatever may come. Tips on for temporal preparedness; finances, emergency supplies, food storage. Ideas for building faith, and strengthening families. Advice on health in all the areas, physical, mental and emotional. A haven for anyone who wants to fortify their lives for whatever may lie ahead.
